Final Fantasy XV DLC (PC) Review

Final Fantasy XV has to be one of my favorite games and has compelled me to play through the DLC.  I am off and on with DLC and sometimes they go undone or set aside for another day.  Like Dark Souls 2, started them but was never finished.  Final Fantasy released three mini-episodes of Nocts companions that fill in holes in the original game's story.  Each one plays like a new game on their own and adds a few things to the original title.  Luckily the Windows edition came with all 3.

Episode Gladiolus

Episode Gladioulus fills in the gap where he just takes off one day during the adventure.  You find that he is taking off to go on a trial to fight the blade master, to gain his blessing.  This trial is known for killing thousands but it was Gladiolus' believe it was necessary.

The combat is broken down to just Gladiolus' mighty sword and a rage counter.  Blocking and countering up his rage allowing you to do more damage.  It took a bit of practice to get the timing down but once you do it's a pleasant experience as you break through hoards of enemies with pure strength.  This mechanic is pretty entertaining and make the hour or so go by fairly quickly.

It is only a little over an hour long but you learn a bit about Gladiolus and about what happened on his adventure.  You can practice this as a time trial so it adds a little value to the otherwise short adventure.  The story wasn't too interesting beyond the fact you now know what happened.

Episode Prompto

The cheerleader and self-conscious adventurer of the group has a lot to learn about himself.  This DLC takes place after Noct mistakenly knocks Prompt off the train.  You will move through a base, the former home of Prompto, where he discovers who he really is and confronts it.

The gameplay is changed as Prompto is a gun based character.  Through stealth kills and finding them on the wall you are able to pick up weapons, which you can aim and shoot.  This is a little bit more clunky then your standard 3rd person shooter but it added a pretty cool element.  If there is a second FFXV I would really like to see this mechanic used more.

This adventure was the more arcady of the three DLCs.  There is also the option to go on side quests in order to gain gear and achievements, adding a little to its length.  I was just getting through the DLC so I didn't pursue them and they weren't necessary.  It was an ok story.  It kinda came off a little rushed and a little whiny.

Episode Ignis

Ignis' story was by far my favorite of the three.  This story takes place during the summoning and Ignis is trying to get to Noctis to make sure he is safe.  Unfortunately, the empires are in his way and he has to fight through hordes of them to get where he needs to go.

This DLC was interesting and showed Ignis as a capable fighter.  He is able to switch between three elements on his weapons that allow for different sorts of attacks.  Fire is a strong single target attack, lightning will have you zipping around like Noctis' flash, and the cold is an AOE that slows down enemies.  He also picks up a hook shot at one point that lets him jump around the building talks retaking areas that were claimed by the empire.

I liked this one with its fast-paced combat and the story was one of the best out of the three.  You get to play up to and during the moment Ignis loses his vision.  Out of all the DLC, I would say this is most fulfilling and a must play through if you have it.

Each DLC fills in holes left in the main game story.  While not full game experiences in themselves they add a little to the game.  I am not so sure I would have paid five dollars for each but I am glad I was able to play them with the combined package.  It will also be cool to try out their weapons in the main game where I am still hunting down some of the bigger monsters in the game.
