Nintendo has been milking the shit of Smash Brothers. Through their past directs it has been a highlight and the one that took place on the first of this month went the extra mile with a whole half hour of content for it. I figured I would give some thoughts on it a few days later. (This was supposed to be done last Saturday but I had a lot of Zombies to kill so my CoD characters could have green faces...)
With the number of characters in-game and the amount you start with, my first thought is this game is going to be a bit of a time sink, which I am ok with. A lot of issues fighters have today is that the gameplay is pretty simple. While each fight can be complex in itself you are still doing the same thing again and again. By giving you something to work for this grind becomes more meaningful. The fact that we start with a small cast to me could be a positive.
What I am not looking forward too is the spirit mode. This is the mode where you will collect cards that will add buff effects to your character and have a star rating of 1 through 4 in how much you will benefit. If you have followed this blog for any amount of time you will know that I am constantly trying out mobile games. So many that it's been like pulling teeth trying to play a few more for review. This is because there is the star system in every damn one of them and when I saw it in Smash Bros I cringed. Having to collect cards, with star values, that you can level, and combine is an overdone and artificial time suck. It's a boring played out mechanic and I am sorry to see Nintendo toe the line. Then again one of their newest mobile games is just a hero collector. (I'll get around to writing about it.)
The $5.99 for a character is a bit fucking ridiculous. $25 for the pack of 5 is almost Capcom bad. It's way too much for a game that has 72 characters already and we don't even know who the hell those paid characters are. I was just a little surprised at this point they didn't announce in-game currency for outfits and to help you unlock characters but I feel like Nintendo is dancing on the edge here.
Everything else seemed ok. The story mode looks interesting and the movie for it was cool. The new matchmaking system makes sense to me where your number will be the number of people you score better then. I can't wait to have 2 next to my name but for everyone else, it will be a cool way of seeing where you place and it will keep match skills equal. We will see if this game is good enough for six dollar characters but I am most likely going to be fine with the main roster.
