Pokemon has been a classic staple in video games. It's also made several appearances in my libraries from the original Blue, to Yellow, then a little HeartGold. In between was sprinkled with other titles like Pokemon Snap. While I didn't have every title I kept up on the game and it's been one of my favorites, especially lately as I am still playing Pokemon Go. Having a switch and the news they had created a game that was going to combine the spirit of Go with the classic Pokemon games Pokemon Let's Go by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company seemed like a must-have.
I haven't finished the game yet so I am going to give a first impression although I have a pretty good feeling where my overall rating is going to fall. The game once again starts you off in the Kanto region in a small town of like 3 houses but for some reason, there is a full-on lab. You are a young boy (or girl) that is recruited by the professor to catch as many Pokemon as you can. In order to do this, you need to be able to battle ever strong opponents who camp out on the route waiting to fight little kids passing by. It all makes so much damn sense.
The combat has stayed the same in that you will have six pokemon you can bring to a battle and each one has 4 different moves. Nothing much has changed overall and the game itself follows really close to Pokemon Yellow with the biggest difference is that you no longer battle pokemon to catch them, you just throw balls at them like Pokemon Go. On top of this, you can see the pokemon in the grass before you go into the catching mode with them. Both of these things are huge upgrades in my opinion. The catch only mechanic shares XP over the party so it has drastically cut down the grind time while not taking away from the overall combat of the game. You still fight other trainers and god knows there are a ton of them.
The graphics are finally in pretty good looking 3-D. The towns have been upgraded from their pixelated past as well as the pokemon that inhabit the world. One thing I am a little curious of is as to why only Pikachus and Eevees have voice actors. All other pokemon have a voice, we have enough space in games, its time for them to do more than make pixelated screams.
I did end getting the game with the new Pokeball controller and I have a gripe with it. The substitute for the A button is to press down on the analog stick and because it controls the directions in the options menu I am constantly accidentally moving up and down on the menu and selecting something I had not planned on selecting. Otherwise its fine, it's responsive, and its a great Pokemon Go + substitute. I used in on my way to work and caught a crap ton.
So far so good. I wouldn't say I am blown away in any fashion but its a solid title. I should get through it pretty quick and I can deliver a full analysis then.
