Just a heads up this is going to be more if a bitch post.
For those of you who haven't bought it, Black Ops 4 has a tier system that works something like the season pass of other BR games we know so well. This system is on top of their already full priced game and what they are demanding is pretty incredible.
There are 200 tiers. 50 days to hit this goal. Tiers, from what everyone can gather is based on time played. It doesn't matter how well you are playing, just how long. The time to take out one tier is about an hour. That's is 200 hundred hours of game time to reach the legendary skins, or pay $1 per tier in the premium currency equivalent. 4 hours of gameplay a day.
Evidently, they heard the complaints and have decided on a daily reward of one tier a day for multiplayer win or merit in Blackout, which is some relief if you can play every day. This reduces your day to day time to 3 hours.
Now 3 hours doesn't seem too bad until you think about that every day. I work 9-5, no kids, live alone but hitting this 3 hour a day goal is stressful. This gives me commute time, 3 hours of gameplay, then maybe dinner before bed. I can't imagine being a busy college student or a father. It would require me to give up every semblance of a social life, and cancel all business trips where I might be out of town for more than a day.
The trick the devs seem to have missed with the season pass is sustainability. I talked about scarcity in an earlier post and it is influential but so is something else. Its called learned helplessness. When people are constantly defeated by a system they can't beat they learn not to try.
Treyarch, why would someone who fails to meet your insane time demand even try to continue? Why even bother to pay to hit the higher tiers if they know every few months they are going to have to pay even more on top of your AAA price to continue getting content that in many shooters are included or only cost $10 when the rest of the game is free? Simple answer, they won't.
