Assassins Creed Rebellion

Let's get the words cash grab out of the way because most mobile games are obviously that.  Behavior Interactive, the makers of Fallout Shelter, have made Assassin's Creed Rebellion for your mobile device.  This game comes with all of the fixings and trappings of what the mobile market has to offer and incredibly they have added something novel that has kept me playing the game for more than a few hours that very few of these mobile games get out of me.

All the Stuff We Have Seen

After putting this game on your phone prepare yourself for the barrage of mobile crap.  This cheeba version of Assassin's Creed has it in spades.  Its yet another hero collector where heroes that have both levels and star ratings.  On top of that is the gear system we have seen in a lot of these where certain characters require certain gear to upgrade.  To get this stuff you either buy some pretty expensive mobile loot boxes, about $2 us for a "cube", or you can farm them from the levels.  These are of course on a static map that you use to find your quests.  This is all familiar and we have seen it before.

Where we start to see this game separate is in what it has coppied from Fallout Shelter.  If you have played Fallout Shelter the base you make it to after a quick tutorial looks familiar.  You will have a building in a grid shape where you will building room to either put Assassins you have found to work or train them.  Things that will net you the letters that act like energy or the gold that is not the freemium currency.  These rooms can be leveled just like in Fallout Shelter.

Something new?!

It's not all terrible crap.  The core gameplay is kinda interesting.  It plays almost like an RPG but with a unique system.  You will be taking 3 assassins with you on your missions each with a special job that are better for some situations than others. For example, some can climb well and others are good at disarming traps.  You are dropped on a 2-D course where you can see the obstacles in the next room and the chances the selected assassin will succeed.  You then have to pick the right assassin to get through the room and get the job done.  If you pick the wrong one they might die or you will fail certain things, like opening a chest.  It reminds me of a very simple This War of Mine mechanic.  It's a simple system but surprisingly entertaining that is of course ruined by adding an auto button, thus taking you out of the most redeeming part of this game.

While buying the freemium currency outright is expensive you can earn it in game.  They start you out with a pretty reasonable amount and offer a monthly subscription that will award you with more for logging in and completing quests and achievements.  Out of all of the mobile crap, I hate the sub model is not it.  Like usually it is the cheapest way to get what this game offers but it requires a time dedication. A dedication this game could earn from me.

After playing the amount of Rebellion I have, I have enjoyed my time with it and kind of want to keep playing.  I liked Fallout Shelter for a bit of time for as pointless as it was but this mix of that game with an actual game mechanic is pretty entertaining.  There is a story behind it too, I am not sure it goes anywhere or is noteworthy, but it is there.  Its nothing amazing or groundbreaking but this game feels like you are actually doing something, as long as you avoid the auto button.

TL;DR:

Assassin's Creed Rebellion is a mobile cash crab that isn't terrible and actually made something new.
