Nintendo Exploiting My Childhood and Its About Time

Nintendo Online is finally here and I dropped the easy price of $20 a year for the services they once gave us for free and some other things.  One of those other things was a handful of NES games that are all available to be played through a Switch app.  I cannot tell you how excited I am to have these games.  Even though it's a small collection it's great to be able to get to play these games again and that's how I know Nintendo is taking advantage of my nostalgia.  I couldn't be more ok with it.

My day job takes up valuable gaming time so I have only been able to get in a few hours of some old classics.  The first game I busted open was Dr.Mario.  The connect four puzzle game was an early favorite of mine only eclipsed by Yoshi.

Yoshi was another drop down puzzle game where you only matched 2 vertically but the trick in this game was the eggs.  The game will drop down a bottom half of an egg and then several other pieces that you can either stack on the bottom half of the egg.  Eventually a top half will appear and anything in between the two halves gets sandwiched to create a Yoshi.  This game always made me feel so witty with the way I managed the eggs and I have to say that feeling hasn't changed.

I can't wait to get an old-school game of Zelda going, some Double Dragons, Mario 3, and of course some Ghosts N' Goblins.  Tecmo bowl is another must.  I never got to play the original Ice Climbers so I'll have to give it a go along with some other titles that the young me never got to try.

What is great about the app is it lets you save a snapshot of your gameplay no matter where you are for each of the games.  This will let you walk away from these games and pick them back at will at any point.  I could not be more happy with this feature.  The next thing I need to do is try out playing two players with an online friend. I hear these games are working fine, unlike some Capcom beat um ups I will not mention here.

We should be seeing some more titles coming out in the future and to me, this was the best thing Nintendo could have done to convince me to pay 20 a year for the online service.  It appears to be a small thing but I have absolutely no idea the coding demands behind the scenes.  I just appreciate this was finally done and I don't have to go to some sketchy website to experience these games again.
