Battlefield V Open Beta

It is not too much of an understatement to say that the FPS world is in a bit of a dry spell.  With the arrival of BR there has been a few titans and many trying to replicate those titans.  Now comes to the field the next iteration of Battlefield that at one time dominated in its own right.  So much so they have made over five of them.  If there was one game that was a time vampire for me it would been Battlefield 3 but I took a long break from burnout after.

So here I am back in the Battlefield world in Battlefield V by EA Dice.  Dropped into what I would call an artistic description of World War 2.   There are some steampunky things going on but this series was never fully about being the most realistic game.  It was more about the battle system and the combat.  None the less, upon logging, I was reminded of a few things.

This game is very tight.  The controls, the action, the levels.  Everything feels thought out and on purpose rather than a happy accident.  Guns fire is clean and feels good. The sounds of every shot is clean.  This game is a finely tuned machine without obvious glitches, without bugs you have to live with, clean.

Conquest mode is the mode offered in the open beta with two maps and I found them both to pretty fun with the snow map a little sniper heavy.  This didn't stop me from genuine enjoyment.  With a little teamwork, you find yourself having a pretty decent effect on the war around you.  The different classes will allow you to make a positive effect even if that isn't necessarily taking out the most enemies, it's a level of satisfaction that current titans are missing.  There are also weapons like tanks and plains that will allow you to be a little OP for a bit of time.

The only thing is after a few hours it felt familiar.  Almost too familiar, like I have done this all before.  A lot.  While the game has grown flashier and sharper, its still conquest mode in Battlefield and if you have played a previous version, you have played this.  It's still fun but not as appealing for the binge playthroughs that this game could pull out when it was fresh.

This being said I think BR is going to be the big draw for me to this game.  It already handles large scale battles so well at such a high level that Battlefield BR could be a breath of fresh air for a game mode I like but feel isn't clean anywhere in a game I feel has become too repetitive. If an engine can do this right, the one supporting Battlefield can.

I won't be pre-ordering the game but there will be money in my account the day this game comes out.  If I see more game modes, when I hear that everything is still micro-transaction free, I think I will be ready to jump back into Battlefield again.  The game is fun, well made, and I think a little bit of freshness will be the push I need to get this game onto my computer.  I was actually going to pass on this version by what I have seen on streams and videos but getting my feet wet has changed my mind.  The open beta was enough to sell me and is worth at least trying.
