MapleStoryM Review

There was a time where I was playing quite a few 2-D MMOs.  They weren't taxing on your PC so you could play them on your laptops, which meant you could fit gaming in everywhere you were, as long as you had internet.  MapleStory was one of the first and one of the best.  Recently NEXON Company took their game to the mobile platform in MapleStoryM and I had to take a look.

It's The Classic Game You Expect

MapleStoryM is the classic game brought to the phone.  This game feels like a simple port that added a few things to make it playable on a mobile device.  The game is an MMORPG where you will pick among several unique classes.  Each class has a basic attack, special moves, and buffs that you unlock as you level.   All of these skills are upgradable in the somehow lovable grind fest to come.

When you think mobile you worry about the controls but they are ok.  It uses the action button and joystick set up that works pretty well.  I had plenty of room on my Samsung S8+.  Sometimes the joystick can feel a little clunky but it wasn't killing my gameplay, just making it less smooth.  The actions are responsive and there are buttons that will allow you to cycle through skill sets so you can equip a more than the 4 you see.  It's a pretty comfortable set up for the game.

There is also the option to auto-quest, which I usually hate because it will take you out of the game.  The difference here is that while the game will quest for you, it does not use your potions for you.  On top of that, the character in auto mode isn't very intelligent when it comes to dodging and will take a ton of damage.  Auto-quest does allow you to be more passive but you still need to be paying enough attention that you don't die.  It pulls you back into the game and is something so many mobile games fail to do.

Mobile Crap Doesn't Break It

Microtransactions have always been part of MapleStory so seeing in the mobile game is no surprise.  The prices are some of the more reasonable prices for the mobile market but still cost too much for the digital items you are getting.  A lot of what you can buy is aesthetic but there are also things that will help you fight the enemies.  None of this stuff is needed though as you can find everything you need in game but it certainly give you a boost in the grind for levels.   It's one of those games that will have you spending money due to the simple fact you are enjoying it and not because of its gating you.

If you are looking for a story you are not going to find anything great.  There is stuff going on but you tend to jump from one area to the next and if you aren't reading through the wall of texts you will miss a lot.  Eventually, you will unlock dungeons that you can enter by yourself and further along you will be able to enter dungeons with friends.

The graphics aren't amazing but either was the originals.  At the same time, people have reported that this game was taxing on their phone so be aware of battery life.  It does cause a bit of a battery drain for mine but my phone is getting up there in age and it doesn't seem to drain more than clash royale does.

I did my best to take off my nostalgia goggles to judge this game but they kept coming back on.  I was a fan of this game back in the day and I am a fan now.  I really enjoy the fact I get to play it in a mobile mode and I think they did enough to keep me into it.  It's a game that could see my money not because they demand it but because they built a solid game.  I have a feeling this will be on my phone for sometime and I think it should at least spend some time on yours.  It's worth trying out.

TL;DR:

MapleStoryM is a pretty solid port of an older and classic 2-D MMORPG that stays true to the formula.  If you liked and miss the classic, its good to go.  If you are looking for a good RPG for your phone, I would highly recommend trying it out.
