This summer Epic Games is promoting their battle royal game Fortnite. This is including 8 weeks of tournaments with a lot of prize money on the line. Last week I tried watching the first iteration but they were having server issues and had to reduce the games. Even when people were playing the games were super slow as the all the team involved were playing to win. Lots of building and hiding, not a lot of fighting. There was a lot of lag, which frustrated streamers and as a viewer, you could feel it. I was almost sure that these tournaments were going to be a bust and after this weekend I have a change of tone.
Fortnite has become one of my staple games and I have been enjoying watching several of the streamers who play it. The Friday Fortnite Tournaments that Keemstar has been throwing have been great so I was hoping that Epic could do the same, if not better. This past weekend I think they showed that they can.
The format for this week was a 10 round solo queue. Each competitor would play a solo round with randoms and would tally up their score at the end with 5 bonus points per win and a big 10 point bonus a 20 bomb. This format worked and I found it incredibly entertaining. The main stream was pretty entertaining as the two casters, Zeke and Hamlinz, did a great job. They sounded really into it, Hamlinz knew the game, and they were able to avoid the cringe a lot of casters can bring by trying too hard. The broadcast was like a Fortnite Redzone where they would drop into end games or players who were near 20 kills. It was good viewing.
The only negative to come of it was with the victory of iDropz_bodies' win on Friday. He was unable to stream so people couldn't follow him. On top of this, he was playing on a console. The 'not being able to stream' wasn't an issue for me but as someone who plays on a Switch, there is a huge competitive deficit of console players. I understand that 8 of the 11 20-bombs came from PC but on average you will find your harder and more talented players on that format. If someone is going to play console they need to play cross-platform. Non the less it's not like he didn't deserve it. Dude has all the right skills and has created a name for himself in other communities before Fortnite but it wouldn't hurt to be more clear about these rules. That way he could have enjoyed his win without the BS.
All in all, I really liked the tournament. I spent all of Friday night watching my favorite streamers play and watched quite a bit of the EU block. There was some amazing displayed and meta I have never seen before. All things you will be seeing some guy in the OG twitch outfit trying to replicate right before you shoot him. I am hoping they can keep these tournaments going because the drama and excitement are there.
