Cheating Isn't Going Anywhere

Since the dawn of online games, there have been cheats.  A younger me was terrible at Counter-Strike 1.6 and used speed hacks myself.  What the younger, slightly dumber, me didn't understand was while it was adding some enjoyment to me, I was ruining the experience of the people around me.  Before Steam came forward if you didn't have an admin actively watch over the server you would have to either suffer the cheater or leave.  Then VAC came into the scene and changed everything, at least on Steam.

It isn't too hard to find examples of the newest, most popular cheats. In PUBG streamers are constantly battling with people shooting through walls to kill them.  A slightly big story was that of Shroud (newsweek.com) getting in the car of someone who was floating around, which later resulted in him being banned for a month.  Even today TSM's Viss was in a game with Dr.DisRespect where they were haunted by players using the same cheat. What made this annoying is this could have been Viss's 2 thousandth win in PUBG. (Congrats ahead of time)  Bluhole has been taking steps to clean up the cheaters but it is still a prevalent problem.   Nintendo hasn't been able to escape criticism and many playing Splatoon wonder if Nintendo is ever going to take steps to curb this behavior.  Recently a hacker took over the leaderboards with the character names spelling out "Please add anti-cheat".(nintendolife.com)  With Nintendo being more and more of an online presence they have seemed reluctant to do anything about these malpractices.  You hardly even see reporting functions in games.

Cheating is something that is hard to curb.  Adding code to check for it can swamp down a game engine and at the same time could be written around.  Reporting requires some level of manpower that some studios do not want to invest in. With this in mind, until young 8 years old have parents that will watch over their shoulders and older tryhards find other ways of feeling some level of happy it is something we will all have to continue to deal with.  A final note: friends don't let friends cheat.
