Fortnite for Switch Review

I first played Fortnite by Epic Games back when it came out. I had felt it was a fun game and would attract a crowd but little did I know it would blow up like it did.  Little did I know that it would be the next time vampire in my life and I would have never believed it was coming to the Switch, which it did.  Now that it was here I had to give it a try and see if it was even worth playing.  I had assumed it wasn't.

How is the Port?

If you haven't played Fortnite yet and don't know what it is then welcome to the world of battle arena.  In a 3rd person view, you will be dropped in with 100 other players to search houses, forests, and mines for weapons in order to kill your opponents.  An electric cloud will slowly close in on a spot on the map forcing you and other players ever closer together till only one person is left standing.  This has been a huge hit on PC and now you can play on the Switch.  What makes Fortnite different then all the others is the ability to use a pickaxe to mine materials to build buildings during combat.

Fortnite is not graphics intensive but the Nintendo Switch isn't carrying too much power in terms of graphics processing either.  My first concern was how it was going to run.  After several hours of play, I would have to say that the game runs pretty well.  I wasn't getting too much slow down if any and every fight I was in left me feeling like I had full control.  Enemies in the distance will come through incredibly pixelated but you could still hit them.  The graphics had to take a hit but it wasn't on a level that makes the game unplayable.

The controls feel fine and you will find that there is a bit of a default auto assist that helps with your aiming so chasing a target in my scopes was rather easy.  The one thing that did suffer for me was the building mechanic.  On my PC I am equipped with an MMO mouse that gives me 12 easy access buttons on my thumb.  This makes building incredibly easy, which leave a lot to be desired when on a controller.  While I lacked a lot of the quick changeability, the way the weapons and crafting are set up make building feasible, and while I was not nearly as fast as on the PC, I was able to build fast enough to keep up in quite a few fights.  The sound was fine as well I could follow enemey locations with the speakers on my tv.

It's not the PC version but it's also not a bad version at all.  The portability makes this incredibly tempting and the fact you can stay on Switch only servers makes the playing field even.  It's also nice that you are able to get the battle pass and all the unlocks available on other consoles and PC.  While I would prefer to play the game on my computer, if I needed a fix, I wouldn't feel bad about turning on the Switch and playing some rounds.

As far as I am concerned there is no reason to not at least try it.  It's free and if you already have an Epic account, as long as it's not on the PS4, you can link it and share progress.  If you haven't played it yet and you have a Switch I would highly recommend it.  As far as I am concerned this was a huge surprise for me and a pleasant one at that.

TL;DR:

It's not as great as playing on PC but there is definitely fun to be had playing Fortnite on the Switch.
