The Winners and the Losers of Battle Royale

The one genre that will define 2018 in gaming is battle royale.  Built from the remains of old throwaway assets or games that people were not too into, these games have arisen much like the MOBA genre and taken gaming by storm.  At the top of the mountain of success stand the two titans PlayerUnknown's Battle Ground and Fortnite.  Below them are several other games that just have not made an impact or are about to attempt to.

Back when I played Fortnite in October I could tell the game was fun but I had no idea it would catch on the way it did.  What I think pulls this game away from any other is the same recipe that made League of Legends so great in that you don't have to purchase anything to be on the same level as those who do.  It goes further and you don't have to even worry about characters you need to unlock as all there is to buy are skins and dancing.  Both of which have been made such an intricate part of the game, it almost feels like you need to get them.  This is all brought together by one of the best hooks I have seen yet in the battle pass.

The battle pass is the apex of what can compel people to play the game.  CS:GO has something like it but what Fortnite did was offer players to earn enough in the pass to buy the next season pass plus more.  On top of that are skins, dances, and emotes and all of this far outweighs what there $30 dollar rival offers for around $10.  Even though PUBG offers skins, there is nothing close to the goal-oriented objectives that give the player of Fortnite something to do to beyond the game itself.  On top of that, they are rewarded for it, no matter how great of a player they are.  All of this excludes streamers and how much they impact popularity.

With the success of some came the failures of other.  Many say battle royale isn't so much a genre but a game mode.  Red Dead Redemption will be challenging this assumption but games like Paladins Battlegrounds, Dying Light, Stand Out: Battle Royale VR are taking a more all-in approach.   This field is becoming crowded and we have already seen the death of titles like Radical Heights as Boss Key Productions is shutting down.  I doubt that Radical Heights will be lonely for too long with the sheer amount of battle royale games coming out.

Guessing how long the genre will be around or how long it will stay this big is a past time of myself and many more qualified minds right now.  One thing is for sure it's found its foothold and we can see it staying around for at least another year or so.  Until then many gamers, including myself, will be enjoying long nights of jumping into towns hoping to be the first with a shotgun.
