If 2017 did one thing is brought what looks like the end of some of the most hated practices in AAA titles, maybe. I will take both of the announcement of COD: Black Ops 4 and Battlefield 5 on their words for now and talk about the direction they will both be heading. These games are the titans of shooters but we saw with Battlefront they are not immune to negative criticism. They also now have other titles in the industry in the form of Fortnite and PUBG they have to compete against.
Call of Duty seems to have noticed a really popular game mode and built a map specifically for it. Battle royale is insanely hot right now with two of the highest populated games featuring it as a primary mode. Treyarch has stepped in with one of the best FPS engines and titles and the results might be something to raise an eyebrow for. Call of Duty has been cut and paste so much recently but stealing from whats hot may be exactly what this game could use. Even more so, Call of Duty might be what the battle royale game mode needs. As long as they keep the rolling ball that is kill bonuses down this looks promising.
With Battlefield we still don't know. The reveal today was tame, to say the least, but we learned a few things. It seems like building, as in Fortnite, has made its way into the genre but once again to what extent, nobody knows. I could see being decent against tanks but with aircraft, it just seems like a waste of time. I use to play Battlefield 2 all the time, barely got into 3, and didn't bother with their WWI skin; It all felt like the same game. With the preview today I am just seeing a new reskin and I don't think I am alone. At least there isn't a premium pass or pay-to-win, which might have been the whole point of this presentation. They wanted to show the new EA, the improved EA, the "I am no longer going to come home drunk on the weekends and make you spend all your money on useless shit or beat the hell out of you" EA. They are really going to have to throw a deep ball at E3 and pretend they are not EA of last year.
Speaking of E3 I am sure we are about to see a handful of new shooters that will be trying to cash in on the building and battle royale that has are now becoming a staple on any console or pc. Whether any of these are going to outshine the recent titans is really is left to be said. There are some great engines here that have been pretty stagnant as of recent but could very well see some new life in this new world. While Fortnite is a cleaner version of the battle royale it is still full of issues that COD or Battlefield will not suffer from. They just have to get past themselves.
Pretty soon I'll be dropping my "Things I Am Looking Forward to at E3" article.
