I have been playing around with my new HTC Vive Pro for a few weeks and after the initial phase of me just loving it I have been able to actually experience a few things on it. From movies to photos to games, there is a lot to do and I wanted to summarise some starter stuff for people jumping in and are not sure where to go and what to do. I still have not purchased motion controls because I am holding out hope for the Valve Knuckles but I might break soon and get the wands, so all of this stuff is controller or mouse/keyboard compatible.
If you are getting VR and you don't have Steam on your PC, get it. This is the center point of my VR experience. Without the controllers, there is still not too much use in the native VR experience but everything I use jumps off of here. I have downloaded Viveport...haven't used it. I really don't want to pay for another subscription in my life right now.
From the very start, there are some pretty unique experiences you might want to start out with, that are free. In Steam, you can look for the first InMind VR. It's a free little experience that shows you some of what the tech can do. It's like a rollercoaster ride but with an objective. Another experience that really is just another roller coaster ride is Senza Peso, which is a short film based on a short opera. It's a really cool experience for what type of entertainment we might be seeing in the future if VR sticks around.
The games I have played so far are pretty cool. I have played a bit of Elite Dangerous but game fatigue hasn't pulled me back in. I have also played Thumper and Subnautica both of which I am enjoying so far and will write a full game review when I finish either of them. Thumper will most likely come first. On deck are AirMech Command and House of the Dying Sun. All of these games can be played without the motion controllers.
Other programs you want to check out are; Youtube VR (free), Bigscreen Beta (free), and Virtual Desktop (not free). Youtube has hours of VR ready videos. Virtual Desktop is the best at loading non-youtube videos and running them at their best performance, it's also a really fun way to just use your desktop in general. Virtual Desktop is also a lot better for watching videos that are 3-D. Bigscreen Beta is fun to watch movies on as they have made little rooms or theaters that will mirror your monitor so you can get a movie theater-like experience at home. Best of all friends can join you in private rooms.
VR might be missing a larger gaming library but it's been around enough it's not short on experiences. With motion controls your world opens up even more as you will use them to get around and play the larger chunk of the existing library. It's not a terrible time to jump into VR and if you have the inclination to do it, you won't be short on experiences.
