I wanted to talk about my newest gaming setup since I got myself an HTC Vive Pro but I don't feel comfortable doing a full review because I have held back on buying the wands. I'll get into this but from what I have experienced I have a lot to say and since my friends are absolutely fucking tired of hearing me even mention VR, this blog will now be my next place of relief.
Getting VR was always on my mind and when I heard about the Vive Pro I figured it was time I jumped in. Had I heard about the bundle they were coming out with later this year I would have waited to save myself a couple hundred but what are you gonna do? Right now my setup consists of the Vive Pro with two of the base stations on either side of my gaming area. I don't have a lot of room to move so its a standing only situation although so far, I have mostly been seated. This has not dampened my experience in the least.
The only previous VR I have been able to experience was the mobile VR headsets. Those are child's play a to what you are getting from the Vive. The video has far more depth, much higher quality, and the sound coming from the headphones adds on to the immersion. I do wish the headphone would fit a little more snug on your head but it's because I am used to having pairs that cover my ears. I understand the design behind it and the Vive sits pretty comfortable atop my head and is easy to look around with.
Maybe it's because I am fresh into it but I have been on a fervor of trying out all of the things this has to offer. First of, Virtual Desktop is a must for videos not already on youtube. Youtube VR is free so not having it doesn't make much sense and I have accidentally spent a late night's hours just going deep into video after video. There are also a couple of VR free experiences you can download from Steam to try out. They are worth a try and to get your VR feet wet. I have yet to check out the HTC VR sub thing but that will be for this weekend.
The first major game I have been able to play is Elite Dangerous. I have sunk many an hour into this game pre VR and I have to say the Vive has re-animated my desire to play. It could get old again a little faster seeing as I can't look at my phone between jumps but the amazing optics really add something to the game. Right now I am flying around in a Type-9, which so far has been a blast. Due to time restraints, it's just been a bunch of flying but I'll be testing out combat soon.
One thing that is glaringly obvious after a few days with it is that most of the experience is based on having the two wands. There are two reasons I am holding off. The first is the hope beyond hope of seeing the Valve Knuckles released this year. Then there is the obvious move of just waiting on the "Pro Wands" that are due out later this year to accompany the new headset. While it will be a pain in the ass to not be able to play many of the games I wanted to try, I think a little patience is in order and I feel like I still have plenty to do. Much like waiting for the PC release of Resident Evil VII VR.
It's been a busy week but the time I have been able to spend with the Vive Pro has been great. There is so much to do and discover and luckily there is a pretty substantial library of regular pc controller compatible games to play to keep me entertained. I plan on trying on Subnautica this weekend. There is a lot more to talk about with this headset and I am sure I will be dedicating more blog posts to just the hardware but so far so good. Best yet, no motion sickness!(yet!)
