This post most might be something like me justifying my pre-order of the Vive Pro and in a way it is but I have been waiting on the sidelines of VR and I am ready to go in. Not only is the technology getting better but the interest has not wained. Better games are coming out for VR and there is enough now to justify getting a unit.
The Vive Pro is the second iteration of the HTC Vive and will be hosting a boost in pixels, a modified face mask, headphones, and will cost a shit ton more without any of the side stuff. Namely no controls, no wireless adapter, or any of the other cool shit. I am going to live with this because I am an idiot and I want the extra pixels. Is it worth it? No idea but I hope it is the right unit because I am getting the sense that there is something in the air around VR.
Valve has recently talked about their commitment to VR and I want to be around to either be elated or highly disappointed. I know we aren't getting a Half-Life 3 in this world but there is some hope for what they could have in store. They have announced they will be releasing 3 full titles for this new technology and, if they get anywhere close to their past success, these games will be on the edge of what games can be. Even with the current drawbacks of VR.
Outside of the Mos Eisley that is VR chat, there have been some titles that look pretty good. OrbusVR is an MMO with low-level graphics that looks fun as hell to play. Resident Evil 7 VR looks incredible and I have yet to buy Fallout 4 so Fallout 4 VR looks to be a great buy. Let us not forget Elite Dangerous VR as it will get me back into the captain's chair to mindlessly zoom through the galaxy again. I also really want to get down on Beat Saber. There is enough to play now where it's not just the typical stand and shoot.
The gamble is that VR takes off. There are still several problems that plague these games. First and foremost motion sickness. 25%-40% of people have reported having motion sickness when playing and its the worst on games with smooth motion. I haven't had a history of this but I'll make sure to add the ginseng or keep a bucket nearby. Lord knows if there are any other side effect on sight and what not because they really haven't been studied or I was just not able to find any good articles about them. There is also the price point for owning one. Not only is it expensive by itself but the rig to run one of them is not cheap. Even if you hit on the lower end and run a GTX 980 you are looking at around $400; you might as well get a 1060 even though it runs a little slower. That is unless you want to fight the cryptocurrency crowd and try to land a 1080 series that can cost you over $1k. It isn't cheap.
Besides being expensive as fuck I haven't found enough holding me back from jumping in. There is enough to keep me entertained and let's face it a world of videos to watch and experience. World exploration videos of course and sideline sports cams. These are the only videos I would be referring to. Can't imagine what other videos exist.
