One Hour into Kirby Star Allies

After finally getting myself in order and transfering my operating system over to my new SSD,  some time opened up where I could sit down and get a first impression of Kirby's newest title on the Switch.  The demo limitied us to a few levels but now I have a better impression of what this game is going ot be like after I set my clock for an hours and played Kirby Star Allies by HAL Laboratory.

It Looks Great

The first thing that stands out about this game is the art direction.  The game looks and sounds great.  Every level is incredibly scenik and gives a lot of candy for our eyes.  The brightly colored playground gives the game a relaxing feel.

This 2-D platformer is smooth.  The controls are tight and there is a plethera of movement sets.  As Kirby inhales and takes over the powers of the enemies he just swallowed he will be able to execute a set of attacks.  This is done by pressing b or a direction and b. The vast number of these moves makes for really interesting gameplay.  It really allows you to search out the weapons you want and play to that style.

Kirby also picks up allies that follow him around.  They each have their own attacks and some of them can add bonouses to the weapons that kirby uses.  By holding up you can unleash combos, buffs, or moves that will help you deal out more damage to the enemies.  It's a lot of damage and has led to my biggest consern about the game.

The Game Has Been Pretty Easy

I was able to complete the first area in an hour and aside for a few parts where I had to run from rolling ball of enemies, the game has been kind of easy.  The two big boss fights and the several small bosses didn't offer a huge challenge.  This is compounded by the fact your allies dish out a lot of damage.  I haven't lost more then half my health yet and I am afraid this might lead the game to be a bit boring.

The game does offer plenty of puzzles but non of them have had me stupified yet or having to take any real pause to figure them out.  This might be just the nature of this game.  It could be that this was designed for a young audience and so they alligned the difficulty to them.  I still think that it is a little low for that demographic.

Kirby has shown early that there is quite a bit of fun to be had with mulitple people.  I have yet to recruit a friend to try the game out with me but I plan on executing a light kidnapping to try out this functionality.  There are other modes in the game as well, which I have yet to try out.

It's been pretty entertaining so far but I am hoping for an increas in the level of gameplay.  Its funny but I am excited about the levels where I start to lose lives.  Kirby Star Allies is not bad by any means and I see myself seeing this game to the end.  I just would like a little more challenge alont the way.

Update:  I died one to Meta Knight because of course I would.

TL;DR:

The game looks great and plays great.  It's a little easy so far and I hoping for more of a challenge moving ahead.
