This Could Be a Huge Year for CD Projekt Red

One Company that I think is about to have a really huge year is CD Projekt Red.  That is if they release Cyberpunk 2077 this year.  This whole post is based on an evidence-free guess we will see the title in 2018.

You will know CD Projekt as the people who brought us The Witcher series.  A company that came from humble origins of localizing games has created one of the best known and renowned series of video games today.  Cyberpunk 2077 will be taking a step towards a brand new game outside of their best-known franchise.  This is happening at a pivotal time.

Tripple-A developers are in a weird place.  With 2017 we have seen some of the biggest abuses by companies that develop what are high budget games.  EA has seen as having sacked one of their best franchises this year with Star Wars Battlefield 2 with loot boxes, Activision disappointed with the loot box heavy Destiny 2, and Monolith has been ripped apart for their new take on the nemesis system with Middle-earth: Shadow of War.  Ubisoft is one of the few companies who were able to walk out of a previous bad reputation with some decent games this year with several titles such as Assassin's Creed and Mario + Rabbids being received.

With what has been seen as a dark time in full priced games CD Projekt has the unique ability to show that they are who we think they are.  I am not sure this game needs to be a knockout to prove their reputation but at least a decent title that makes you feel that your money is well spent.  Not only is this important for those of us who play games but, with the suffering reputations of their competitors, a chance for them to possibly be a go-to for future franchises hoping to or already in the video game industry.  This might sound like fandom but you can raise an eyebrow or two if you imagine a Star Wars single player game picked up by the same people who brought us Wild Hunt.

This is also a time where GOG.com could be seen as a real and positive alternative to Steam.  Steam recently has been flooded with games that are just pure and simple trash.  Right now GOG does not nearly have the title caliber as Steam but it's DRM free reputation and decently curated selection of indie titles has made it a destination to for shopping.  CD Projekt has been doing this right.  With the successful release of Cyberpunk, we could be assured that they will see even more of an increase.

This is all up in the air based off of when we see Cyberpunk released.  The game has been in the works since as far back as 2012 and it's over two years since their last title so the time sounds right.  My bet is with PCGamer.com in that we see it late this year or early next year at the latest. If it's successful I think we will see a lot of people trying to get cozy with this CD Projekt opening the doors for a new powerhouse in the industry.
