Logres: Japanese RPG Review

I am pretty locked in a handful of games this week and so a few day ago I decided to roulette on another mobile game to fill in.  Logres: Japanese by Aiming Inc. caught my eye and I decided to give it a go.  While you get what you expect out of mobile games with your daily login, your "fusion" systems, and loot chests for gear, it's not bad.

The Game:

The game reminds me of RO but only because how the map mechanics work.  Early on you are introduced to a quest system that will let you select a type of quest to go on.  You can do the main journey, the hunter ones, or several special events and time-based ones.  When you go on this quest you will be given a goal such as talking to an NPC or fighting mobs and then dropped on a map.  On this map, you will see other players who have a quest in the area and something really unique happens.  When you engage in combat another player can select on your combat instance on the map and join in.

The combat plays like a classical RPG but an interesting aspect is you can have random people, guildmates, or friends jump in to help you out.  This is the part that reminds me of RO.  You are on a flat simple map and while you can run solo you don't have to.  You have several classes you can choose from that have a certain set of weapons you can use. They all have unique moves but it really doesn't make combat feel that different among classes.

There is also a paper, scissors, rock system to pay attention to the element of the unit you have and the ones you are fighting.  You are able to hold a lot of gear to equip and while at this point I have not had to, I assume much later you will need to care what is equipped.  It just recently jumped to a level 90 cap and I am not there.

The game has your standard Japanese RPG mobile system where your gear is also upgradable.  It will require you to meld other gear into it.  You can buy weapon packs through in-game currency or the RL money exchange (crystals) for a currency to buy them.  The prices are a bit much for what they are asking for especially at the in the game rate you gain crystals.

This game is like most mobile games in that the more you pay the better you will do.  At the same time, the casual experience isn't bad.  You are not inundated with ads every time you bat your eye.  The only thing it's trying to do is encourage you to buy packs.  I wasn't annoyed by the way the way they pushed it either.

My Experience:

Honestly, when I saw the banner and first put Logres into my phone I expect a trash game full of loot chests and your generic phone game garbage.  Surprisingly it's not what I got. Yeah, there is better loot when you spend a lot of money but there is enough to do as a solo player it really doesn't hinder your gameplay.

The maps you jump in on are shared so you will see other players going into combat and you can jump in after them, which is actually kind of cool.  I couldn't convince any of my RL friends to get this and level up with me but I see this as something that could be a positive experience.

One thing that kind of bothers me, there is a good chance that I just not have gotten far enough, but the game isn't challenging.  The baddies tend to be pretty easy and I haven't had to find myself using much more than a bow that I leveled up early. I'll walk into an instance and do mad damage in an AOE that can clear a fight in no time.  This is made even easier if you wait for another player to jump in and then join the instance.  I have played a few hours but the challenge isn't heavy still.  It's still entertaining but it just isn't that hard.

The game is simple and the art style is nice.  The soundtrack got old super fast but that worked out because it is a mobile game and you can just listen to Spotify. The game isn't something groundbreaking and amazing but it also isn't garbage.  It's might be worth the try.  I don't see it having a great staying power unless you have a group of friends to play it with but even a good guild could keep you playing.  It also helps the game is crappy add free.

TL;DR:

Logres is a pretty decent mobile game.  It doesn't feel like a money trap game but more of a volunteer system if you like the game.  The gameplay isn't bad and if you have other friends on it, it could be a bit more enjoyable.  Not a terrible game and maybe worth a look for those looking for an RPG.
