With Bayonetta 2 being re-released for the Switch and 3 on its way I figured it was about time to dive into the series. I was not more familiar with this game then the fact it has been the ire of some critics for its hypersexualization of the female lead. That shit never bothers me so I set my clock to an hour and got a first look at whether Bayonetta by Sega, Platinum Games, and Nex Entertainment was there for eye candy or had some substance to it.
The Experience:
Let's not beat around the bush. Bayonetta is all substance. This game drops you into the dark yet quirky world right away. You play as a sexy fighting witch with an pistols at hand and attached to her boots that can range enemies or finish of a combo.
The game is a hack and slash fighting game that tastes of the Devil May Cry and with more mechanics to keep it exciting. There are several examples but one of my favorites is the dodge mechanic. If you are able to dodge at the right time, you will slow down time for your enemies, which allows you to deliver an ample combo before the enemy knows what hit them.
The tutorial was something else. You are dropping off a cliff on the top of a clock tower. While most would consider this situation dire, Bayonetta and her blond friend decide that this was the perfect battle platform. This is the stage where you learn just how smooth the combat system is.
It's like you are playing a movie. With the transitions from action to cutscene, you never feel worn out from the emersion. The game has yet to break character and I quickly fell in love with our Heroine and I have started to like the cast around her.
Early on it's obvious why this game drudged up so much pushback. Bayonetta does not seem fond of clothes and the little she does wear is conjured from her hair, which she will conveniently need to use when performing moves. It takes a stab at religious puritanism right off the bat and so far has offered no apology for it. For those faint of character, the insults of this exterior drivel could come off as offensive. For the rest of us, it a refreshing dig at a dark world.
I loved the Devil May Cry and if someone had told me this was a spiritual successor I would have jumped all over it earlier. An hour in and I am in love with the game. The fact you can upgrade weapons, buy new moves, and you are judged fight to fight on how you are playing is something that is just too appealing. At first look, I think I am all in on this game. It will be interesting to see if the game can keep me this excited or becomes a let down in the end.

TL;DR:
The first hour of Bayonetta has me enthralled. This hack and slash stylized fighting game is clean and fluid in its presentation, combat, and design. I can't wait to run this title.
