One of my favorite Twitch events happens twice a year and is hosted by Games Done Quick. AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) takes place in the winter and SGDQ (Summer Games Done Quick). This isn't too much of a secret event but for those who haven't heard about it or only breezed by, it's a really cool for old-school gamers if not gamers in general. It's also one of my favorite charities to give to every year.
Games Done Quick is filled with some of the best speed runners in the video game world. Speedrunning is the act of getting through a game as quickly as possible. Whole communities pop up around dozens of games, many of the games are 10 years or older. Using tricks, glitches, and frame perfect moves, these speed runners strive to optimise every run to beat the games at record paces. What's really impressive is there are players who have memorized and practiced the perfect dance for games that are 3 or more hours long.
This is a cool hobby and whats even better is Games Done Quick invites dozens of these speed runners together for a week of 24-hour streaming. This stream is accompanied by a fundraiser. They have donated to CARE and Organisation for Autism Research but now raise money for Prevent Cancer Foundation in the winter and one of my personal favorite charities Doctors Without Borders in the summer.
Prevent Cancer Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection. They are a 90% charity on Charity Navigator, which makes them a 4-star charity and have been for the last 2 years. They give 75% of all donations to their cause, which is a pretty high amount as non-profits are renown for spending too much on administration costs, something PCF has kept down. Cancer is an incredibly complex problem and with all the charities out there that take advantage of cancer prevention donations, it's nice to have one truly dedicated to their goal.
Doctors Without Borders is one of my favorite charities. I will disclose here I am a monthly small donor. Doctors Without Borders sends much needed medical aid to all corners of the world. Where there is an outbreak or health dilemma they send western doctors and supplies to those areas that usually do not have them. They are an amazing 97.23% charity on Charity Navigator and a solid 4-star charity. Over 80% of their funds go to their cause and if you pay attention to a lot of the crisis going on around the world you will hear their name. The work they do is incredible.
From humble beginning raising tens of thousands of dollars a year, Games Done Quick has turned into one of the shining lights of gaming and now raises millions. Every year these organizers put a lot of time into putting the schedule together and setting up the venue for all the events. If there is one complaint is there can be some pretty cringy meme jokes bouncing around but it also gives it authentic charm many gaming events lack. It doesn't feel plagued by industry. Every year it has been getting better and I hope to see many years to come.
