The Game:
Phone Destroyer is a hero collecting RPG. You will play as the new kid in the town of South Park who is really good at your phone. So good in fact it is your weapon of choice. Not only does your phone do damage you can use it to summon allies to help you take on the enemies.
In every level, you will be marching from left to right summoning heroes from a deck of cards that you can build. There are certain classes like tanks and ranged characters that perform better in some instances over others. The cards are not star rated like a lot of games in this genre but instead, some cards are just simply better than others.
You can level these hero cards by upgrading them a certain amount of times then collecting enough copies of the cards to level them up. You gain items to upgrade them from open lockers at the end of the levels and through PvP. You can also buy booster packs with card copies and upgrade items.
The PvP system will set you against other players with the same PvP levels and you will be sending units back and forth until one does enough damage to kill the other player or the 3-minute timer runs out.
Phone Destroyer has three different currencies. One is the in-game gold you can earn, a PvP ticket currency you get after PvP victories, and a Premium Currency that you can buy for real money. This is a little steep at $5 will only get you a pack of 10 cards and some upgrade mats. That is 50 cents for a digital card, which I find to be pretty ridiculous. You can get premium currency through the achievements in the game but the pace is rather slow.
My Thoughts:
I love the South Park IP and when they release something I tend to like to try it out. I did not have high hopes for this game because freemium mobile games just tend to be crap. Phone Destroyer isn't absolute garbage and I think it does some things that make it almost commendable and pretty fun.
First and foremost this game does not gate you with a stupid energy bar. You don't have to wait to gain energy to be able to complete a level. Each level comes with 15 different versions of difficulty that you will climb each time you beat it. I am only in the 3rd chapter but this leads me to believe there is a lot of potential grinding to be done. The best part is I can do it on a binge because they gave the player the option instead of making them wait.
The combat system is ok. It's no doubt a pay to win model but at some level, you can find some strategy to it. Like in a lot of arena brawlers in PvP the players are set up on each side of the field and they do a little bit of damage to enemy units. This damage is really helpful in overcoming a wave and I don't think I have mastered it yet but there seems to be a slight art in the counter push. Then again it helps to just have strong cards so skill isn't as necessary as I would like to believe. A huge plus for me is there is no auto-combat that I am aware of. This to me always takes me out of the game so much that it's just too easy to let go.
Animation and voice acting in this game are all South Park. Granted their graphics are never great but it works on the phone and the humor is all there. It is offensive right off the bat and they never tend to pull any punches. What I found funny is they are really ripping on you the player through the whole game. That's okay though because I was able to customize my toon to look awesome in what was a surprisingly nice character customization feature. Also, I am really good at my phone and I like that the game confirms that.
This game isn't going to win any awards but it has left some of the worst things about mobile games behind. I can't say enough how much I like that I am allowed to play as much as I want and the game is not going to limit me. Its combat system is simple but still allows you to get involved. Leveling up heroes and cards is always something that is kind of stupid but it isn't so much of a burden that it's ruined the game. I have been able to spend a lot of time playing and I haven't felt too held back. Not sure I would drop too much money in this game because the price for a pack is steep but it's a fun little time waster. I see myself continuing on in the game just to get into the story.
TL;DR:
South Park: Phone Destroyer is a mobile card collecting RPG. While it has the card collecting crap and the price is expensive they dropped some of the worst aspects of mobile games and gave us a South Park experience. The game isn't great but it's not a bad little addition to your phone worth some play time especially if you like the South Park type humor.
