One Hour into Fortnite 50 v 50 Battle Royale

I had already tried out the Fortnite Battle Royale mode and thought it was good so when I heard they had set up a 50 vs 50 mode it sounded worth my time.  It plays a lot like the Battle Royale mode but this time you are on a team of 50 people.  I set my watch for an hour and played Fortnite 50 vs 50 Battle Royale by Epic Games and People Can Fly.  (The mode is available till Dec.17th, 2017.)

The Experience:

Fortnite has made another mode like their Battle Royale but this time you will be placed in a small squad of people that is a part of a 50 man team.  You can use the in-game voice option in your squad but not over the whole group.  It starts off like their Battle Royale mode where you are on a flying bus and you are dropped onto an island armed with nothing but a pickaxe.  You can use the ax to farm materials from the environments to use yourself.  Weapons are scattered through the level with varying degrees of accuracy and damage.  These consists of pistol, shotguns, and rifles with your occasional rocket launcher.  You can find heal kits and shield potions as well.

In the 50 vs 50 mode you will be able to see your teammates on your map marked in green.  Your squadmates all have different colors and are also marked on your map.  Immediately the dynamic of the game changes completely from the free for all.

In any battle royale match it's about finding a starter gun ASAP just in case you didn't land alone.  It seems for a good 2 to 3 minutes this mentality is still there but you start to see teamwork evolving.  People will start leaving weapons behind, you will have some people pointing to some decent ones, and every once in a while you will get a teammate who starts talking.

For someone who is only mildly excited about survival games, this dynamic adds a whole new level to gameplay.  Once you get set up to survive it becomes about getting to some teammates and working together.  This is super important when the storm closes to the center of the map and you need to move.  Now when you move you don't have to check all angles for any possible player but checking the horizon vs where you are with your team.  If you see several green arrows behind you on the map, you can almost feel safe that that isn't where you are going to get shot from.  For many fans of the genre the constant panic is something they enjoy but for me, some security in the game is pretty great.

You also see a lot more building then you do in the free for alls. In the beginning, if you have made it to your squad, you can actually farm materials while feeling like it won't get you killed.  This turns the endgame into a frenzied game of forts.  In the few matches I had, more than once both teams were building up large structures across the hills from one another, trying to build something that gives them the vantage over the enemy team.  Instead of small defensive structures, you get tall elaborate towers built in seconds by people working together.  This was my favorite part.  While someone is suppressing the enemy you are building some stairs up with walls on the side for a quick vantage point.  Then you get to use said point to deliver some bullet rain on your lowly ground standing enemies.

I did have some issues with the game launch as it was for some reason changing my dominate monitor to my second smaller screen.  I had to go into my properties and change it back right before the loading screen or it would load on the wrong one and my mouse wouldn't work.  There was also a lot of choking in-game with graphics when I turn my character.  I have a GTX 980 so I would expect smooth play but this wasn't the case.  Even in medium settings, I would get hiccups.  The game has cell shaded cartoon-like graphics so I am not sure why it's acting so demanding.

Other than that the game ran pretty well.  No crashing or freezing and it looks like they have added a season system with XP since the last time I played.  There is also some freemium currency but it looks cosmetic.  You can mess with your appearance at the lobby screen before each round.

The game plays is tight enough but there is some quality of life features I would like to see. It would be cool if as people die, you get an option to join another group that still has people.  This would help the survivors have a better team dynamic.

This game mode was fun to play and like the Battle Royale should see a few hours of my time sunk into it before it goes away, especially because its free.  I would like to see the graphics optimized in the near future so the game feels smoother but it's alright so far.  Even though it's only Early Access this game has a lot going for it so far. This mode is in a limited run but I don't doubt will see the light of day again.

TL;DR:

Fortnite 50 v 50 Battle Royale mode is another great addition to their Battle Royale mode.  It adds a whole new level of team dynamics onto an already intense game mode.  Its free to play right now so it's worth checking but the framerate might be less than optimal.  Available until Dec. 17th, 2017.
