My Thoughts On The Video Game Awards

Where do I begin?  First off, I think it was pretty obvious after the second award came out that we were just in a 3-hour advertisement for video games.  Every single award was followed by and preempted by several ads for games, gear, games and gear, and sometimes movies.  There wasn't even a flow to it. No thought on where some ads came in and others left off.  The PS4 VR was followed by and Oculous ad.  Who the hell put this together?

Even bringing out the star power it felt like an ad.  For example, after the gave the best action game to Wolfenstein 2 we watched two ads and then a movie ad for Del Torro.  I assume this is how they got him to come out and give the awards for Best Art Direction, which surprisingly was given to a deserving Cuphead.  I still haven't had the pleasure although it is in my backlog.  I am sure my post will come out within a few years.

As far as the few awards presented go Carol Shaw was a cool story about an unrecognized game designer. Faker deserved his award because he has been awesome.  Breath of the Wild was a good pick for game of the year.

Since this awards seemed more like a condensed E3 I want to go over some of the games.  Soul Calibur next year and Bayonetta 2 coming to the switch is cool.  This is only topped by Bayonetta 3 coming out on the Switch.  I already bought Bayonetta on my pc but I think I will bump that up in my queue and work through the franchise.  I have seen a few lets plays and heard nothing but good things so it should be fun to jump in. The new DLC for Breath of the Wild looked okay but I still haven't bought the last one so I am not sure a motorcycle is going to sell me.

There was also plenty to criticize. The quick roles for some of the rewards were not great.  Like the best strat. going to Mario Rabbids, for some reason, did not get time. Then I missed the next group of them because he was just slinging them off. This was followed by the best debut indie game that of course went to Cuphead.  I apparently should play this game.  A Way Out's creator looked coked out and made for what had to be one of the most awkward moments of any awards show.

Big question is how the hell Overwatch won that awards for a long-lasting adaptive game?  We will never know their numbers because they don't release them but it just doesn't seem their numbers match the hype especially with Warframe and Rainbow Six in that mix.  I can think of far more deserving games but it didn't seem like any of them besides Overwatch had as many ads.  The fact that Path of Exile was not on that list is a little baffling.

The only thing I can do is excuse the show for being young still.  It was objectively better this year but it's not where it needs to be.  Geoff Keighley makes a pretty decent host but could use a co-host to help him with taming unruly guests.  On top of that, they have to figure out how to condense it down or maybe make it more fun for the audience who looked dead by the end.  Were the even sourcing alcohol because that is how you keep people around.  They also need a better way to separate adds and previews where it doesn't feel like you are just watching more ad.  World Premiers barely came through.  In short its nice that there is a chance for deserving people to awarded for games, I still think they deserve better and I hope the producers hear the criticism.

Last thought, what the fuck is Death Stranding?  Did any of that shit make sense?  I know I was like 4 beers in at that moment but I don't remember having dropped acid before the show.
