King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon by Square Enix Holdings is another one of your generic collect all the heroes, run through a choppy story, what even is going on mobile games. They made a south to north shmup (shoot um up) game where you play as heroes who shoot energy in front of them. It's kind of a cool idea but its so bogged down with mobile game minutia and busy UI that it is just hard to get into.
The Game:
King's Knight is on the surface your cut and paste mobile game. You will collect heroes, level them up. Collect weapons, level those up. Both of these are unlocked through random card packs with some random animation showing that you have unlocked them. While you can get lesser versions of these things by completing in-game quests, nothing is as strong early on then the loot crate unlocks. This is on top of a game mode that is actually quite different than most games we see. It plays like a schmup in that you will have a hero that travels from south to north on your screen who can jump and fire a weapon. They also have strong abilities that can do even more damage. The environment is mostly destructible and by destroying some areas that shine you will be able to gain hidden items. Heroes can't really shoot sideways, they can only shoot in front of them.
You can go in with a party and can switch your character if one gets low on health. You can also invite a friend's hero from your friend's list to fight alongside you.
The heroes have different abilities based on their class. Some will shoot further than others and others will do more damage up front. There are a plethora of classes and also element type, which can allow for a wide variation in your team. Your weapons and equipment are also vast and you can use "zell" to level them up.
The solo mode has a story mode that you can go thr2w. There also missions for characters above 3 stars. There are also event missions and one thing that was pretty cool is co-op. You can invite friends or jump in a room with randos to take on different maps. Granted the co-op did not seem altogether challenging but it was still pretty novel and a quick way to pick up some better loot.
My Thoughts:
Maybe I am not getting the modern mobile game design but I am getting extraordinarily frustrated with the overabundance of gifts and unlocks. I think developers are trying to make us happy by pounding us with an extraordinarily large amount of gifts but it's getting to the point where I am spending an uncomfortable amount of time to click these achievements and unlocks. This game just gives you too much and the fact you can only go through 10 at a time forces you to spend the time to just get through them. The gifts are not always that big. Sometimes they are just one crystal and you may get 5 per level. With the amount autoplay in most games, you think they could just send this to your inventory.
Anyways, the game outside of the mobile unlock garbage is ok. It actually has a lot of potential with the co-op and the way you can play through the levels. There is an auto-fire and surprisingly no auto fight, which actually adds to the game in that it does not turn into a maintenance game in that you have to play to complete it. The pause button feature was also a wise move since it is a cell game, it allows you to pause what you are doing, complete an RL task, then come back to where you were. I didn't like the fact I couldn't turn sideways or backward to fight the minions still attacking me from those directions but that wasn't anything that destroyed the game for me.
When you log into the game you feel like you are logging into any mobile game in the past year. It doesn't aesthetically feel new and the anime cheba art style just made me feel like I had been there before. The UI on the quest screen is so busy and after every map, you are just inundated with exclamation marks all over your screen that is really obnoxious. Event after event and bonus quest after bonus quest is just annoying now. The price of the premium currency is pretty damn ridiculous as well. You get like 100 crystals by opening the game yet two bucks gets you like 10.
The game could be fun to play if the signal could make it through the noise but there is just too much noise here. That and I have already played a million hero collection games. The fact that this mechanic is in this game just make it feel stale and like I have done it all before. Its really hard for me to recommend because if you are playing anything like it, there is nothing that will be distinguishable enough to recommend it.
