I had a review ready yesterday to post but I have been dying to talk about the newest announcement in Esports funding. The New York Yankees are investing in Vision Esports.(www.forbes.com) Once again another major investor is stepping into the ring of the up and coming world of Esports. The one problem I had with this news, I found out, I have no fucking clue who Vision Esports is.
Vision Esports seems to have spawned from the company Vision Entertainment who have been behind many internet productions, a lot of which are esports. Vision Entertainment spawned from the company HDfilms, which created a lot of the content they still do today. It is based on internet entertainment production and heavily invested into the branch of Esports.
Vision Esports is not a one trick pony as they also look over Twin Galaxies, which is a company that keeps maintains records and does video game promotion. It's not even close to new as it was founded in 1981 by Walter Day who made it a habit to go to his local arcades and record the high scores. (Wikipedia) It has had a relationship with Guinness but, after the founder left, it began to charge to enter records and while the relationship sputtered they struck a new partnership recently to hold a branch of video game records. They continue to keep vast amounts of records and scores in all video games and have, as reported by dotesports.com, used "money ball" type tactics in recruiting for the Esports team Echo Fox.
This brings us to the last branch of Vision Esports. Echo Fox. You might remember Echo Fox from last year in LoL when they were forced to disqualify for not submitting a roster when they faced NRG. Now they are working to become a top team with players such as Froggen and Looper in their team. As a lot of people know they are still working on a name for themselves in the pro circuit while their challenge team holds names such as scarra, Voyboy, and Dyrus who play more for entertainment now. You might also know them from their several other teams in Counter-Strike, Street Fighter, and Call of Duty.
While the name Vision Esports doesn't immediately bring familiarity to mind they hold some of the most well-known influences in video games and Esports. It's no surprise that they were pegged for additional funding as an avenue for future growth.
