Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow

Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow by Jam City, Inc, TinyCo is the hybrid of all mobile games. It includes not only a city builder but an RPG element.  All if this is inhibited by just how bad the game design decisions were.  Everything takes for fucking ever and is expensive as all hell.  This game has some of the worst pricing for any game I have ever seen on mobile. The Futurama story and artwork can't save this game from what it is.

The Game:

Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow is a hybrid of a phone game that starts you off in a city builder after a quick intro video.  You can click on the characters to get them started on quests that take time but result in experience and Nixonbucks.  Once you have enough Nixonbucks and some area you can use a robot to build a building.  Buildings will also produce money and experience, which are on a timer and you must click on the building to receive.

There are three are three currencies.  Nixonbucks can be earned from questing or doing missions with characters.  Pizza, which can help you speed things up.  The final currency is Hypnotons which is earned from doing space missions.  Both Nixonbucks and Cash can be exchanged for real money.

The most interesting aspect of this game is the RPG element, which is known as a Space Mission.  These allow you to take the characters along in missions into space.  The ship only has so much fuel, which is regenerated over time, and will maneuver you through a map.  Every once in a while you will hit a random encounter and your characters are used to fight them.  Attacks can be buffed by clicking a circle around the enemy at the time and enemy attacks can be mitigated by doing the same on your characters when attacked.  There is a timing aspect to this as well that will cause you to get a bonus or miss. There is also a charge that builds up over time with each character that you can unleash in combat.

My Thoughts:

Holy crap does everything take for fucking ever.  In the first 10 minutes, things go from taking a couple minutes to full on hours.  Everything takes way too damn long and I just started the game. In order to get done with a quest that I started within 30 minutes of actual gameplay, I have to wait 8 hours.

The story is lost on the time you are waiting.  Something happened with hypnotoad and Fry now wants to save Leela and to do that you have to get to her building.  By estimates, my grandchildren will be about halfway there and that is if I adopt kids in my 50s.  The quick missions I was able to go through seemed like they had the story humor from the show but once again, I still have to wait for almost 8 hours for Amy Kroker to get out of a nightclub that took me 3 hours to build.  This is on day one of gameplay.

The worst part is there is nothing keeping track of where your heroes are.  You have to remember the last time you put down your phone where you put them if you want to see their progress. I guess it doesn't matter because in order to get them to do anything else you have to wait till they finish or feed the mission pizza to get them out.  The price per time of pizza is expensive, especially when you consider the price.  Which brings me to the worst part.

The price point is fucking insane in this game.  For $2 you can get 1000 Nixonbucks, which is still 500 Nixonbucks short of some of the starter building.  For $99 you can get 70k Nixonbucks but you are still 5k short of one of the most expensive buildings in the game.  For almost a hundred dollars you still can't afford the best this game has to offer, which is just dumb to me.  Even the pizza slices are insanely expensive when you look to how fast you would need to use them to boost everything.  Whoever created these prices either knows something the rest of us don't or thinks people are that dumb.

I don't know who was making the decisions on this game but they made all the wrong ones.  This is an IP that people love and have brought back from the dead at one point but this game, like the show, is going to die with it.  You can't expect the average person to pay demonstrative amounts of money for gameplay that is way too similar to games they have played and has arguably been done far better.  This game is not worth the price values of the unlocks.

TL;DR:

While Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow packs a lot into the game it is questionable whether it has the staying power to keep people interested.  While it has many mechanics, it has many mechanics we have seen before.  To get anywhere in this game be prepared to spend a shit load of time or money.
