Titanfall: Assault Review

The mobile market is defining itself through a few game genre types and what I like to call Tower Brawlers is one of them.  With Clash Royale finding success a few IPs are trying their hand at the genre.  In steps in as Titanfall Assault by NEXON M Inc. (I have never heard of this company but they make mobile games, I think.)

The Game:

To start Titanfall Assault is your standard Tower Brawler where you will be playing cards that cost resources in hopes of overpowering the enemy and destroying their tower.  This resource timer is based on a global clock so you and your opponent gain the same amount in the same amount of time.  This iteration of the genre also has cards, which are leveled to increase their strength.  In order to level them, you must gain copies of the cards either through chests or buy it on the market.  Then it costs gold to upgrade.

This game has the standard free in game currency that you earn and the currency in which you can buy for real money.  It also has your standard daily check in, with a bonus for seven days, and chests that unlock over time that you gain from winning matches.  The chests contain cards, credits, etc.

There are game elements that set this game apart.  While you do have two towers you can knock over, with the last one being an instant victory, there are three domination points you can capture to gain points.  Once you get to 100 you will win.  The cards you can play are also different in that there are three card types that you will have in the game. The first type, which you can have three of, are your Titanfall soldier.  You get a set three per round and you send them to capture and defend points.  You get three Titans, which come later in the round and cost substantially more.  They are very strong and used mostly for tower attacks.  The final type ability cards that can do things like drop missles or light troops to help hold a point or fight ennemy units.  These lighter units do not move.

What is also interesting is how the Titan Soldiers move.  They have jet packs, which allows them to be highly monoverable around the map.  This means even the points that you have captured that are behind your wave are vunerable to attack.  This will make you concentrate on the whole map the whole game.

My Thoughts:

The game is okay.  It's nothing new even though it adds some elements.  The issue with these games is the wall you hit with other player's cards.  No matter how good you are if you are not able to match an enemies card power you will get destroyed.  I have been playing Clash Royale for a while, which is the only reason I have a chance against people who drop more money on the app than I do.  Maybe if I played long enough with this game I would have had the same experience but that is a long way off and I have to decide if I want to spend that time and money to do so.

If there is one thing that can be said about this game is that it is a bit more involved.  While you are usually just watching waves going down two rows or less in this genre, your soldiers keep the field dynamic.  Since they are able to jump over building they can quickly change the focus of a map.  While titans are making the slow march to the enemy guns your soldiers can be directed to go to any node to attack or defend.  This will mean that you need to pay attention to the whole map throughout the game.  If you get too comfortable an enemy can quickly grab the first node after your base and drop titans right behind your push.  I do think this gave a pretty unique dimension to the battle field.

Their is enough variation of titans,  soldiers, and abilities that you can build some unique strategies in combat.  The game is new enough a set meta has not been solidified yet.  That doesn't mean that there won't be one and an important indicator is how well the dev team responds to it.  If they can fix the balance early the game could have a life.

I did experience a really bad bug when I started this game.  I had to put my phone down, for a not work related reason because I would never play games at work, and I was at the point of the tutorial where it teaches you to unlock chests.  When it came back up the chest had a two and half hour counter on it and wouldn't let me unlock it or do anything else.  I waited it out, unlocked it, but I was still stuck on that screen.  I had to do a full uninstall and repeat of the tutorial before I could play again.  Not the best way to start a gaming experience and most likely played a role on how I felt about this game overall.

TL;DR:

Titan Assault is an okay tower brawler.  It is a bit more involved then what you are getting out of Clash Royale but you will still hit the card ceiling that these games tend to have.  If you are into the genre and looking for something different, this wouldn't hurt to try out.
