An Unfortunate Remind That the Streaming Industry Is Young

In the streaming world, a relatively large issue has come to light.  Tifu has started a lawsuit against FaZe, the group that he streamed under. I am not going into the legality of the lawsuit or how egregious FaZe was if they really took 80% but I want to go into another facet of this whole thing that reminds of us how young and in need of some professionalism this new industry is.  If you don't know about the lawsuit here is a good summary by the Hollywood Reporter.

What I want to talk about is the shit show that came out of this video.  Keemster, aside for what he has done in promoting e-sports. has never been one to play on the side of professionalism and candor and Faze Banks going on there before an upcoming lawsuit was so amateurish it is full on cringe-worthy.  While Banks is not listed as a co-owner of Faze he was a founder which is bizarre on why he set off on a tirade of claims that will 100 percent show up in the court battle for this company. On top of that, he sent out a tirade of tweets where at one point he and Dakota do a back and forth on contract information, a move that would make any company owner very uneasy.

This whole situation blows me away.  The E-Sports scene is young and gaining momentum. Money is being put into the scene but for some reason, the owners of Faze can't seem to put a muzzle on their own members.  If I was an investor for this company I would (and should) be raising an eyebrow.  Contract issues aside this whole thing reeks so much of amateurism that in a corporate setting it would result in the ousting of the CEO.

In the world of money, image is everything but Faze seems to care little about theirs.  Not only does it look bad on the company but it truly reflects poorly on the industry.  This whole situation is just a reminder we are on the frontier and there are amateur companies riding what apparently is a pretty easy money wave.  The issue is with all boom markets is the money will start to attract the eyes of more and more professional.  People who can handle situations like this and that is where the investors will go.

If Faze can't clean themselves up and figure out how to control a message, especially right before a court battle, we will most likely be speaking about them in the past tense in a couple of years.
