Resident Evil 6/Biohazard 6 Review

And yet another iteration of the Resident Evil franchise where we shoot yet another branch of super strain virus zombies reeking havoc in yet another city.  I am a follower of this franchise and played all the way up to this title. This isn't your Resident Evil of old.  While the old games held you in suspense in a cramped atmosphere just waiting for the next attack, the newer iterations are a full on action movie in a game.  Resident Evil 6/Biohazard 6 brought to us by Capcom has shed all scare elements and like 5 is an action horror survival.

The Game:

As this franchise is known for, Resident Evil 6 is your over the should shooter where you work your way through a set path of objectives killing zombies and human mutants along the way.  Headshots matter and ammo is sparse.  In this particular version, there seems to be a much larger emphasis on melee attacks with combos doing the damage several rounds of bullets cannot.  You will also find stronger weapons sprinkled throughout the game that will help in the fight against evil zombies.  The game allows you to level up some stats such as weapon damage and items dropped by collected points through out the level in the shape of objects and cashing them in when you finish. Through out the game, there are several quick time event and puzzles where you will need another person but luckily for single players, the AI is more than competent to help out where needed.

There are four branches of this story the first being Leon and Helena who were supposed to protect the president but failed so now they are out to stop Simmons, who worked for the the President.  Our good friend Chris Redfield is back in this game with some rando soldier Piers Nevins and they are trying to suppress the virus outbreak.  Young Sherry Berkins has grown up and is now protecting Jake Muller the son of the traitor S.T.A.R.S captain Albert Wesker.(The guy we kill in 5)  Jake Muller, of course, has super blood that will stop the virus because there always has to be one of those. Finally, you can play as Ada Wong who was intermixed in all these stories as she takes on Simmons from the shadows.

There is also the ability to invade and be invaded by other players who are online but this can be turned off.  Now that the game is a little older I didn't really have that type of interaction with people anyways.  There is a clock between levels that will try to auto-match you with other players but I never got a match and at one point just started skipping it altogether.  I didn't play any of the other extra games either but they do exist as more PvP modes.

My Thoughts:

I guess Resident Evil 6 can be best described as that restaurant that you forgot you ate at.  It's not bad but it also isn't particularly memorable.  Like 5 I am not sure I will remember this game much past this review.  It's not that the game is bad but its hard to call it good.  I did have a chance to play this co-op with a friend a while back but still, I wouldn't say our gameplay was really that memorable.  Replaying it solo I remember the frustrating part but nothing that blew me away.

The graphics are good for when it was made but this game was an obvious port to the PC.  The game menu is clunky and you can't quickly access your weapons using the number buttons.  In fact, 3 is mapped to a roll.  Getting to your grenades through shift and the scroll wheel or F and G is just obnoxious.  I also don't understand why Esc doesn't close your menu especially since it won't pause the game and you can be stuck in configuring something while being mobbed by a zombie. If you can get past this then you can get to the game.

Since I have long given up on this franchise for its original zombie survival feeling I expect it to be the wildly confusing story, mixed with quick time events from hell, and puzzles that will keep you dying until you realize the not so obvious answer.  This is intermixed with shooting bad guys who now sometimes spawn into a second more powerful form when dead.  Honestly not sure where the matter for all of these extra limbs are coming from but the smallest people can grow into some mean monsters.  A few times the game is broken up into some mini games like flying in a helicopter to break the monotony, which can be fun. Really though, do you have to hear your hero's name screamed out every time you die?  If I had to hear Helena yell out "Leon!!!!!" one more time I was going to lose my shit.

Story spoiler

So let me touch on this story.  Some dude that worked for the president of the US named Simmons unleashed a new virus on the world aided in expansion by Clone Ada.  Simmons cloned Ada Wong because why not.

Leon and Helena's story has you falling over a million times and yet somehow one fall lands you into a lake.  Not to mention where the hell are these giant catacombs under Washington DC?  You really just need to suspend belief here.   Especially how you kill super Simmons.

Sherry and Jake's story takes the cake though in what I can only describe as QTE hell.  I died so many fucking times to accidentally pressing the wrong key or miss timing a press.  It was my least favorite by far.

On the other hand, I did enjoy playing with Chris as you follow him and his crew in nothing more than a zombie squashing squad.  It gets especially dicey later when the virus is released across the city.  That was fun.

All in all the game was okay.  It had its highs and lows but nothing outstanding.  As long time Resident Evil fan I still enjoy going around squashing these super enemies that eat bullets like candy.  It's not the scary game of old but it is still fun to mow down the mutants and the undead. If you are looking for a scary game, this isn't it but if you feel like shooting some zombies with some puzzles mixed in, this might be something to look at.  I think getting this game on sale is the best exchange for what you are getting.

TL;DR:

Resident Evil 6/Biohazard 6 is another iteration of the newer Resident Evils games.  The game is now just horror survival game.  If you are looking for the Resident Evils of old this isn't it.  This is more an just an okay shooter.
