When I heard that Square Enix was entering the mobile game market way back when, I was very excited. The thought of an IP like Final Fantasy gracing my phone with its amazing gameplay and stories was enough to make me believe in the mobile games. While we did get some "official" remakes of the classics, SE also decided to redirect the company bathrooms into the app store. With failures so painful the make you consider going back to a flip phone. Final Fantasy: A New Empire, made by Machine Zone, is competing with All The Bravest for number one spot on the garbage list.
The Game:
It's a freemium city builder game. If you have never heard of these or need an idea what these are Clash of Clans, Evony, Game of War, and on and on are better examples. In this game, you are given a city and you must build buildings that create resources to create other buildings. This city builder has an army aspect so you also have to build barracks to build those out. There is also research to increase the amount of resources you can farm, strengthen your hero, and other various benefits.
The world around your city is a grid where you can see other players and in this particular skin of the genre, you have monsters to fight and resources that you can send your army to gather. You also have a hero system where you can fight the monsters on the map that coincide with the research level your hero is at. The heroes also give bonuses to gathering or attacking if you send them with the army. There is gear that you can craft and attach to your hero to buff these said attributes.
Events are constantly popping up for those that have joined a guild to encourage a certain aspect of gameplay and reward those who have reached a certain level of achievement points.
You can also buy in game currency (Gil) for real money to buy resources and boosts that can make things build faster or your army stronger. There are few other things like shields for your city to prevent other players' attacks available to purchase.
My Thoughts
If this game sounds familiar it's because it is basically the reskin of the game Machine Zone has been making over and over again for the last few years. This is the same company that brought you Mobile Strike and Game of War: Fire Age. I played a lot of Evony when it was just browser based so the novelty was gone before any of these games hit the Android market and maybe I am just burnt out but this one sucks.
Everything takes forever unless you pay. You get about 5-8 hours of the upbeat gameplay that is supposed to lock you into these games and then everything begins to slog unless you pay. Ok fine, it's a free game but the disparity I faced early on just turned me off completely.
I started playing on launch day and dropped a five spot in the game to give me a little boost. In most games like this, paying will give you a boost but you don't get too far ahead making it unreasonable for everyone else. Well, this isn't most games and five dollars was shit compared to what I apparently needed to be paying to keep up.
I had joined a guild early and moved in with the "hive" (a collection of players close together) for protection. I checked on it at least three to four times a day to make sure I was building units and resources were moving. Then we went to battle and I was attacked. Fine, that's part of the game, but the problem here was I was attacked by level fucking 3 units. My units were level 1. Shit kicked in. The amount of resources you need to build up that high is fucking insane and yet these players were already there in a mass of units I could do nothing to stop. Not only that but as they were attacking me, I was losing mass amounts of resources, setting me back even further.
In games, I am ok with frustration. I played through Dark Souls 1 and I am currently working through 2. Frustration I can handle but this is just pure unbalanced bullshit. This is made for people that have a dime to drop with little else for the smaller players to do then be farms.
The aesthetic is also not good. The city you are building hardly feels like a Final Fantasy world. You see some characters from FFXV but that is it. You stick Bowser and Luigi in there and it wouldn't make a difference. There is just recycled music and no story. There are so few redeeming qualities of this game I feel like writing this much about it is a miss justice.
So yeah I didn't like it.
